Dry Cleaning vs Other Methods

Dry Cleaning vs Other Methods

There are many methods of carpet cleaning. Three of the most common are bonnet cleaning, truck-mounted extraction and Dry Cleaning.

Bonnet or spin cleaning involves a rotary floor machine with a cleaning pad soaked in solution. As it moves over the carpet, the agitation causes dirt to be absorbed into the cleaning pad. The cleaning solution used with bonnet machines uses optical brighteners such as bleach which polish the cut fibers of the carpet, making the carpet appear brighter and cleaner. Unfortunately, though bonnet cleaners are able to remove some surface dirt, they also end up pushing a lot of dirt and cleaning solution further down into the carpet pile. This residue can then become a magnet for even more dirt.

However, though it can be useful for spot cleaning, this method is not usually recommended as a means of long-term carpet care because it is not the most effective at removing dirt.

Major Cons:
  • Increased Chemical Load – Bonnet cleaning adds chemicals to a carpet.
  • Wear from Agitation – Over time the scrubbing pad can cause the carpet to fray and its seams to separate.
  • Shorter Carpet Life –  The lifespan of a carpet that is exclusively bonnet cleaned is generally half that of a carpet that is cleaned using truck-mount
Truck-mounted extraction (a type of deep or hot water extraction)  As its name suggests, it uses a hose that is mounted on a truck and shoots a mixture of hot water and cleaning solution into your carpet. The pressure and temperature of the water agitates the carpet and loosens dirt which is supposedly then vacuumed back up by the hose.

This method of carpet cleaning is not so effective in removing all dirt and requires a tremendous amount of water and  cleaning solution which can leave dirt attracting sticky residues on your carpet.  This cleaning generally just pushes the dirt down to the padding and as carpet dries, all dirt and stains are re-surfaced again. Truck-Mounted extraction is an old school method of cleaning carpets. Very often customer complain on the extended drying time, Dirt and stains reappear fairly fast after cleaning and worse carpet becomes even dirtier on traffic areas than before it was cleaned.

Major Cons:
  • Operating costs are higher. Equipment is expensive to buy, breaks very often and maintenance requires skilled labor.
  • If the truck is not setup right, it can add too much water to the carpet which can cause molding, mildew or other problems.
  • If extraction is performed too often, it can reduce the carpet life because the water will start to separate the carpet from its backing as well as carpet buckling and stretching may occur.
  • Condos and apartments on higher floors almost are impossible to be cleaned with a truck mount.

What is the best way to clean carpets then?

The DryMaster Dry Cleaning Method

Dry cleaning is also known as deep cleaning. That’s because it is the only carpet cleaning method known to remove at least 97 percent of dirt and bacteria from carpeting. It is also the only method that reaches all the way down to the lowest layer, or “pile”, of your carpeting to clean it thoroughly. This makes it the best method for dealing with ground in or difficult stains.

When it comes to carpet cleaning, the ability to deep clean is just one consideration. Since Dry cleaning uses not as much as water as steam cleaning, it can take far shorter time for the carpet to dry after treatment. Depending on how dirty and soiled the carpet is and how thick it is, it can take 45 minutes to a few hours.

As the name suggests, Dry cleaning involves the use of a cleaning solution to remove dirt from your carpet. These solutions are called “dry” shampoos. These shampoos use significantly less water than steam cleaning. This means that carpets that are dry cleaned generally dry much faster as there is less moisture to evaporate once cleaning is done.

Another big plus is that since this method involves a portable unit, there is no restriction as where you can clean. Apartments and condos on a higher level can be easily reached.

Dry Cleaning method became very popular method of cleaning and customers are willing to pay more for this cleaning method.
